1989
As the winds of democratic revolution sweep across Eastern Europe, Communist rule crumbles in country after country. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 is the high point of dismantling the post-war divisions. Finally the Soviet Union collapses in 1991. The end of the Cold War is accompanied by a rising tide of nationalism that sees former republics and regions declaring their independence. |
