Ang Lee's tale of an unlikely love affair between two cowboys, set in the desolate scenery of Wyoming, had been tipped for best film.

This biopic focuses on the time author Truman Capote spent researching his book In Cold Blood, about the murders of a farming family.

The surprise winner of best film was Paul Haggis's tale of people of different racial backgrounds involved in a traffic accident.
