Evolution Indian musical traditions have always been very strong in the UK - albeit mostly out of the mainstream gaze. Traditional bhangra groups have flourished but younger musicians have taken it a step further by fusing it with modern urban styles like hip-hop and R&B.
This was done for an Asian audience over the past decade, with major record companies sceptical about its appeal until recently. But as Indian culture and Bollywood have become more fashionable, so has bhangra. Its leading artists have had pop hits for the first time and some in the US are also looking to it as a fresh sound. Dance mixes of Hindi songs are also becoming more popular.
