ROSKILDE
Roskilde, Denmark
26-29 June

Roskilde is Europe's best-known festival after Glastonbury, and dates back to 1971's Sound Festival – set up by two high school students.

Since then, the festival has seen it all – mass nudity, drunken bikers, bizarre artworks, and an attempt to fill a swimming pool with pudding.

But Denmark's biggest festival was hit by tragedy in 2000 when nine people died in a crush, prompting a rethink about crowd safety at all festivals.

Massive Attack, Metallica, and Blur played, along with Iron Maiden, Bjork and Depeche Mode singer Dave Gahan.
