Heavy rock rules at Germany's biggest festivals – with Iron Maiden and Metallica headlining at Rock Im Park – held in the Bavarian city of Nuremberg – and Rock Am Ring, which takes place at Nuerburgring race track, near the southern town of Nuerburg.

But the shows were hit by a trio of big cancellations - injuries and recording commitments saw Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and Sum 24 pull out.

Other forms of music do get an airing – since Rock Am Ring started in 1985, past festivals have seen Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker, Santana and Faithless come to play.

This year's line-up saw Cardigans, The Hives, The Dandy Warhols, Stereophonics, Badly Drawn Boy and Moby play both shows.
