Raise the Titanic was released and was a giant commercial and critical failure. "Raise The Titanic, it would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic," said producer Lew Grade famously.

Chariots of Fire was released to great acclaim. Colin Welland gave his stirring "The Brits are coming" speech at the Oscars, where it won four Academy Awards.

The following year Gandhi took eight awards from 11 nominations.

Channel Four launched in 1982 with a pledge to invest in films, going on to produce Secrets and Lies and Four Weddings and a Funeral among others.
