Situation: Leftist Rafael Correa is set for victory, promising wide reforms.

With nearly half the votes counted, Mr Correa had 68% of the vote while his conservative rival Alvaro Noboa polled about 32%.

Mr Correa opposes a free trade deal with the US and has promised to close a United States military base in Ecuador.

Ecuador is electing its eighth leader in a decade of political turbulence. Three of them have been ousted by angry crowds.
