Bernie Sanders - formerly the representative for Vermont's only congressional district - has won the Senate seat vacated by Jim Jeffords, a left-leaning independent. Mr Sanders - who describes himself as a socialist - has no party affiliation but will count as part of any Democratic majority.

Mr Sanders's vacant House seat has reverted to the Democrats, while incumbent Republican Governor Jim Douglas has won re-election.

SENATE
Independent Bernie Sanders defeated Republican Richard Tarrant. Vermont's other Senate seat is held by Democrat Patrick Leahy.
