Bob Corker held on to the Senate seat for the Republicans despite the departure of incumbent Bill Frist, who is leaving to pursue presidential ambitions.

The Democrats had hoped Congressman Harold Ford Jr would help them take the seat and become the first popularly-elected black senator in a southern state.

In the House, veteran state Senator Steve Cohen held on to the seat vacated by Mr Ford for the Democrats.
