Incumbent Democratic Senator Robert Menendez beat Republican Tom Kean. Mr Menendez was appointed last year by newly-elected Governor Jon Corzine to fill Mr Corzine's vacant seat, so this was his first electoral test.
A win by Mr Kean could have derailed any hopes the Democrats had of regaining control of the Senate.
Republicans have complained about electronic voting systems.
