After a recount in one district, the Senate seat of Republican incumbent Conrad Burns went to State Senate President Jon Tester, taking the Democrats tantalisingly close to control of the national Senate. The aftermath of the Jack Abramoff scandal is thought to have been a factor; Mr Burns received large donations from the disgraced lobbyist, although he denies any wrongdoing.
The Republicans at least did not have to worry about their control of Montana's single House district, however: incumbent Representative Denny Rehberg has won.
The Republican incumbent Conrad Burns lost to Democrat Jon Tester. Max Baucus holds Montana's other Senate seat for the Democrats.
