The key Missouri Senate race was one of the closest in the country. Incumbent Republican Senator Jim Talent conceded to a strong challenge from State Auditor Claire McCaskill, who ran unsuccessfully for governor back in 2004.
Ms McCaskill benefited from the unpopularity of Mr Talent's stance on stem-cell research. There was an initiative on the ballot to protect it in Missouri, and he came out against it. Polls suggested that most Missourians supported the measure.
Democrat Claire McCaskill beats Republican incumbent Jim Talent. Republican Christopher Bond holds the other Senate seat.
