Democratic candidate Martin O'Malley won the governorship, which had been held by the Republicans since 2002.

Democrat Ben Cardin defeated Republican opponent Michael Steele in the Senate race to replace retiring Democratic Senator Paul Sarbanes. Among the House races, in the open 3rd district Democrat John Sarbanes retained the seat for his party.
