A run-off in Louisiana's 2nd district meant that the result was delayed until 9 December when Democrat William Jefferson emerged as winner. Mr Jefferson had faced a run-off with fellow Democrat Karen Carter due to electoral rules in the state which require a second round of voting should two district candidates fail to gain a winning margin in the first. Mr Jefferson's win came despite him being embroiled in a corruption scandal ahead of the election.
In the 3rd district, incumbent Democrat Charlie Melancon held off a strong challenge from Republican Craig Romero.
There was no Senate race this year. Democrat Mary Landrieu and Republican David Vitter hold the seats.
