Democratic candidate Chet Culver defeated Republican Jim Nussle in a knife-edge contest, which followed the retirement of Democrat Tom Vilsack
Mr Nussle's decision to go for the governorship and vacate his House seat created a very competitive open race in the 1st district, which attorney Bruce Braley won for the Democrats.
There is no Senate race this year. Democrat Tom Harkin and Republican Chuck Grassley hold the closed seats.
