Two House races were expected to stand out.
In one, the Republicans held on to the 6th district despite the challenge from Iraq veteran Tammy Duckworth who was hoping to take the seat for the Democrats, following the decision of incumbent Henry Hyde to step down.
But in the other, for the 8th district, Democrat Melissa Bean won re-election - her seat was considered to be the Republicans' best chance of a pick-up.
There was no Senate race this year. Democrats Richard Durbin and Barack Obama hold the closed seats.
