The US presidential election will be won or lost in a handful of key states. Analysts think these so-called swing states could go to either the Republicans or the Democrats, and many will see intense campaigning. Most saw close races in 2000 and some have changed hands often in the past. Large states are key prizes because electoral college votes are allocated according to population size and the candidate who wins each state wins all its electoral college votes.
