As tension mounted throughout the week, many businesses closed in central Port-au-Prince and people scrambled for household basics.

Many petrol stations in the capital have run dry.

These people were waiting for gasoline to fuel small cooking stoves and lamps, necessary because of the country's frequent blackouts.
