Nelson Mandela's ANC emerges with a 62% majority, with the ruling National Party second, gaining 20% of the vote nationally.

The NP wins a majority in the Western Cape where it was strongly supported by coloured (mixed race) voters. The Inkatha Freedom Party receives 10% of the vote, mainly in its KwaZulu-Natal heartland.
