2003 - Rebels advance on Monrovia
A fragile peace took hold in Ivory Coast and a national unity government was formed.
In Liberia, a new rebel group surfaced near the Ivorian border calling itself the Movement for Democracy in Liberia (Model).
It made advances in the south and east at the same time as Lurd rebels pushed closer and closer to the capital, Monrovia, from the north.
Meanwhile, Liberia's increasingly beleaguered President Taylor was indicted by Sierra Leone's UN-backed tribunal for war crimes.
