North Africa and Middle East

HIV is beginning to strengthen its grip in a region where traditionally it had been relatively low. Sudan remains the hardest-hit, where a mainly heterosexual epidemic has brought HIV prevalence to more than 2%. UNAids fears it is likely to spread in areas where conflicts that have wracked the country have died down. There are signs of epidemics among drug users in Bahrain, Libya, and Oman, and sex workers in Yemen. There are fears that difficulties in getting accurate data could be under-stating the prevalence in some areas, such as Morocco.
