High-income countries

HIV infections are on the rise in the United States and Western Europe, although the wide availability of antiretroviral therapy is lowering the death rate. While much of the recent rise has been attributable to drug injection, UNAids says unprotected hetrosexual sex is now a major cause. Such infections more than doubled in western Europe between 1997 and 2002. In the UK, HIV has become the fastest-growing serious health condition.
