Political profile:
Howard Flight was first elected to the Commons for this very safe Conservative seat in 1997, but had been active in Tory politics for many years.
He was a personal adviser to Norman Tebbit during the latter's time at the Department of Trade and Industry.
He shares many of his mentor's Eurosceptic views and has said that he would never vote in favour of a single European currency.
Mr Flight is a banker by profession and has a love for and thorough understanding of the financial world - attributes which gained him a place on the Conservative's front bench Treasury team.
He was promoted from junior Treasury spokesman to shadow chief secretary to the Treasury.
But Michael Howard in September 2004 made him the party's "special envoy" to the City of London.
Firmly on the economic right, he supports radical cuts to the size of the state and the widescale privatisation of social services.
He is also a supporter of the Conservative Family Campaign and the Freedom Association.
