Political profile:
Kate Hoey was one of the casualties of Tony Blair's reshuffle after the 2001 election, when she lost her job as sports minister.
Following the sacking, she immediately wrote an article denouncing her former boss, Chris Smith and has since become critic of many aspects of government policy.
A Belfast born unionist, she accused the prime minister of "appeasing" the IRA.
She had previously been a parliamentary private secretary to Frank Field and a junior minister at the Home Office.
But, as a devoted football fan and former high jump champion, she had always coveted the role of sports minister.
She has often been a contrary figure on the Labour benches, holding some views that are out of step with the mainstream of her party's opinion.
She supports fox hunting and opposed a ban on handguns.
