Andrew Mitchell ended his first stint as an MP as a social security minister, having also served as a whip.

The son of former Conservative MP David Mitchell, he was tipped to become a Tory chief whip had he not lost his seat.

In November 2003, he returned to the frontbench as a junior shadow economic affairs minister.

And he became a shadow minister for homeland security in September 2004.

Mr Mitchell has been a keen supporter of the principles of Thatcherite Conservatism, as well as backing the return of capital punishment.

Married to a doctor, he is a strong supporter of the NHS internal market.

He was also an early advocate of rail privatisation.

His commitment to free trade and its associated ideology has been the common thread of his political career.

As the sole Tory member of Islington Health Authority in the 1980s, he urged the wider adoption of competitive tendering.

In his time outside Parliament, he picked up a wide range of directorships and advisory positions.
