Paul Burstow was first elected to the Sutton and Cheam constituency in 1997, defeating the incumbent Conservative MP Olga Maitland.
He kept the seat for the Liberal Democrats in 2001.
Since then he has served as the party's social services spokesman, specialising in issues affecting the elderly and disabled.
He was then promoted to health spokesman 2003.
He came to the Liberal Democrats from the SDP and remains committed to issues of social inclusion.
He is also very keen on reform of local government structures.
