The House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA
Alan Simpson was first elected to the Commons in 1992 but his political attitudes show a much stronger affinity with Labour's 1983 manifesto than with the party led by Tony Blair.
He was the leader of the campaign to retain the old Clause IV of the Labour constitution.
Mr Simpson is rebellious and strongly ideological - indeed he often seems convinced that the collapse of capitalism is imminent.
He is an officer of the left-wing Campaign Group and sits on the board of Tribune.
The MP has joined every major rebellion against the government - on benefits, privatisation and military action.
He was among the few MPs to oppose military action in Afghanistan, supports anti-globalisation protesters and remains a supporter of unilateral disarmament.
In addition to the usual roll call of left causes, Mr Simpson is also a committed environmentalist and a dedicated opponent of GM food.
