Political profile:
Bob Wareing is a Labour veteran whose career has been spent mainly on the back benches.
He is a member of the Campaign Group, and is one of the most persistent rebels against the Labour whip, having voted against the government on issues such as privatisation of air traffic control and welfare reform.
A former adult education lecturer, he was elected to the Commons in 1983, and served as a whip throughout the 1987 Parliament.
He takes a very strong interest in international affairs, particularly eastern Europe and the former Soviet bloc.
He never misses an opportunity to promote greater ties with former Soviet republics, and was one of the few Labour MPs to oppose the NATO military action in Kosovo.
Mr Wareing takes a conservative view on social issues, voting against the equalisation of the age of consent for gay people and the extension of stem cell research.
