Jeremy Corbyn was first elected to the Commons in 1983.
He remains committed to the same Socialist vision he had during the Thatcher and Major governments.
He is also the most consistent rebel in the parliamentary Labour party.
He is a left wing member of the Campaign Group and is an outspoken critic of the government's record on human rights and civil liberties. He is especially critical of the way asylum seekers are treated.
He attracted criticism in the 1980s for his support of Sinn Fein and a united Ireland.
He was a champion of the Birmingham Six and Guildford Four before their releases.
Mr Corbyn has been a vocal opponent of the US led war on Iraq.
