Political profile:
Chris Mole entered the Commons in November 2001, holding Ipswich for Labour after the death of Jamie Cann.
It was the first by-election of the 2001 Parliament; the campaign was notable mainly for the misspelled letter which Tony Blair sent Mr Mole in the course of the campaign.
Polling day itself was livened up by falling on the same date as Ipswich Town's win at home against Inter Milan in the Uefa Cup.
A model Blairite, Mr Mole led Suffolk County Council for eight years with reforming zeal.
Shortly before Mr Mole's election to Parliament, Suffolk was named Council of the Year by the Local Government Association - the first County Council to be so recognised.
Mr Mole is also deputy Chair of the East of England Development Agency.
Prior to his election, he worked as an electronics engineer.
