Political profile:
Ivor Caplin was elected as the first ever Labour MP for the former Tory bastion of Hove in 1997, having served for two years as Leader of the local council.

He made working to restore the crumbling local health trust one of his key election issues.

He is also very interested in sport and animal welfare issues.

He was soon rewarded with a position as parliamentary private secretary to Margaret Beckett, then Leader of the House of Commons.

After the 2001 election he joined the government payroll as an assistant whip and in June 2003 became a junior defence minister.
