Despite Denmark's strong tradition of euroscepticism, these elections handed a clear victory to the country's main opposition party, the Social Democrats, who are supporters of EU integration. The result is seen in part as a backlash against the ruling Liberal party's support for the war against Iraq. The party saw its score decline to 19.4% against 23.4% in 1999, and will lose two of the five seats it has held up to now.
