DESCRIPTION: Czech Republic

The Czech Republic's opposition Civic Democratic Party, which campaigned against giving up too many powers to the EU, were the clear victors of these elections, picking up nine of the nation's 24 European seats. The results were a blow to the three-party governing coalition of Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla, whose Social Democratic Party, polling less than 9% of the vote, picked up just two seats. Coalition partner the Christian Democrats took 9.57%, also translating into just two seats. The Freedom Union, the third coalition member, did not win a seat. Turnout at 29% was one of the lowest in the EU.
