Cyprus joined the EU in May as a divided island, and these first European parliamentary elections showed continuing strong support for the rejection of a UN blueprint to reunify it. Four seats were won by parties that rejected the UN plan: two by the Communist Akel party, one by the Democratic Party of President Tassos Papadopoulos and one by the new For Europe party. Turnout at over 70% was among the highest in the EU. Voting is compulsory in Cyprus, but there is no penalty for failing to cast a ballot.
