Swedes gave surprisingly high levels of support to a brand new party, the June List, which is highly Eurosceptic. It came in third place, taking just over 14% of the vote - far more than the 5% polls had forecast. The governing Social Democrats lost a seat but still won the largest share of the vote, while the main opposition Moderate Party came in second. The June List's strong showing could result from low voter turnout - just 37% - but it could also reflect deep-seated Swedish ambivalence about the European Union. A 1994 referendum on membership delivered a narrow vote in favour, but in 2003 Swedes decisively declined to join the euro despite the government's campaign for a "Yes" vote. Sweden will have 19 seats in the new parliament, down from 22. Turnout in 1999 was 38.8%.
