The opposition centre-right New Slovenia party came in first with nearly a quarter of the vote, but the governing centre-left Liberal Democrats came in a close second; each party will have two seats in the European parliament. The centre-right Democratic party will also have two seats, while the centre-left United Social Democrats picked up Slovenia's other seat. Slovenes backed European Union membership by a margin of almost nine to one in March 2003, but only 28% turnout out to vote on 13 June. Slovenia is the only former Yugoslav republic to have joined the European Union so far. It will have seven seats in the European parliament.
