DESCRIPTION: Belgium

The ruling Liberal-Socialist government posted modest gains, winning a combined 13 seats - a gain of two. The opposition Christian Democrats won five seats, a gain of one, and the Flemish Bloc took three, also a gain of one. Turnout in a country which has compulsory voting was 90.08%, the highest in the EU. The federalist Belgian Prime Minister, Guy Verhofstadt, is currently the front-runner to take over the presidency of the European Commission.
