The smallest country in the European Union had among the highest voter turnout, at 82%. The Maltese backed the opposition Labour party, which campaigned against EU membership in the run-up to the country's March 2003 referendum on joining. Maltese narrowly voted then in favour, but on 12 June, 48% supported the Eurosceptic Labour party, while only 41% backed the governing Nationalists. Malta will have just five members in the European parliament. Malta uses the single transferable vote system for the European parliament.
