Latvian voters decisively rejected governing parties in voting on 12 June, with only one party in the three-party governing coalition winning a seat. The opposition free-market For Fatherland and Freedom party was the big winner, taking four seats and almost a third of the popular vote. The conservative New Era party won two seats and its leader, former Prime Minister Einars Repse immediately began pressing for a new government. But the current Green-led centre-right coalition may draw some solace from the fact that turnout was just over 40% - far lower than the 72.53% turnout in a 2003 referendum on EU membership. Two out of three voters backed joining the union in that vote. Latvia has nine seats in the European parliament.
