Welsh assembly election
constituency
DESCRIPTION: Preseli Pembrokeshire
This mostly rural seat brings together parts of English-speaking south Pembrokeshire and the Welsh-speaking northern part of the county. Preseli Pembrokeshire includes the ferry ports of Pembroke Dock and Fishguard, and much of Milford Haven, which has shifted its reliance to leisure and tourism as oil refining and fishing have declined. The area’s dramatic coastline lies within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, and St David's, the smallest city in Great Britain, is one of its major visitor attractions. The tourist industry was hit by the Sea Empress oil spillage disaster of 1995. A more recent blow was the foot-and-mouth epidemic. There is relatively high unemployment, particularly in the south of the constituency, and the Welsh assembly government announced a regeneration package at the beginning of this year.
Preseli Pembrokeshire was created in 1997 from part of the constituencies of Ceredigion and Pembroke North, and Pembroke. The Liberals, Plaid Cymru and Conservatives had all done well in various parts of it before its formation, but Labour has dominated the new seat at both Westminster and assembly elections. It lies within the Pembrokeshire local authority area, whose electors were the only voters in the western half of Wales to vote No in the devolution referendum. PREVIOUS RESULTS
