Welsh assembly election
constituency
DESCRIPTION: Delyn
Delyn is one of a number of north Wales seats which until fairly recently could be relied upon to vote Conservative. The present seat was created in 1983, bringing together urban Deeside and the rural, more Welsh-speaking areas. Delyn itself consistently returned Tory MPs. That changed in 1992 when Labour’s David Hanson had a narrow win to become the MP. He has strengthened Labour’s hold and now has a majority of more than 8,600.
Labour repeated that success in 1999 when Alison Halford became its first AM. Ms Halford was already well known because of her fight against Merseyside Police for alleged sex discrimination when she was assistant chief constable. She is standing down at this election. Delyn comes within the Flintshire local authority. Labour dominate the council, with more than half the 70 seats. The council has also been the subject of a number of investigations by the district auditor. The seat includes the towns of Mostyn, Holywell, Mold and Flint, and looks out over the Dee estuary towards Merseyside. Delyn, along with the Alyn and Deeside seat, is within the Flintshire area, which registered one of the biggest No votes in the 1997 devolution referendum, at 61%. PREVIOUS RESULTS
