DESCRIPTION: Shetland
This is the UK's most northerly seat and is nearer to Norway than Scotland. The main town of Lerwick is a centre for the oil industry and further to the north is Sullom Voe oil terminal. Due to the declining oil industry, there has been a return to traditional industries like fishing. The recent crisis in that industry is likely to be an election issue for those who feel remote even from the parliament in Edinburgh, and often ignored as a consequence.

The Lib Dems have held the Westminster seat of Orkney and Shetland since 1950. The two groups of islands were each given their own seats at Holyrood, partly to allay fears that their remoteness from Edinburgh might lead to their being disadvantaged. Tavish Scott, who won the seat in 1999, became a deputy minister in the Scottish executive but resigned over its handling of a compensation scheme for fishermen - a decision which will have done his re-election chances no harm.
