DESCRIPTION: Roxburgh & Berwickshire
Although the landscape of this seat is mainly rural, it includes the sizeable market towns of Hawick, Kelso and Jedburgh. Hawick is the largest of all the Borders towns and, like the others, grew up on the textiles trade, with tweed cloth being the prime export, and is the home of the Lyle & Scott and Pringle knitwear companies since the nineteenth century. The decline in the textiles industry has hit this seat and the neighbouring Tweedale, Ettrick & Lauderdale hard, and has been a major threat to employment in the area. Kelso has a Georgian elegance about it, and this together with a famous ruined abbey brings a fair number of tourists to the area.

Euan Robson was elected Liberal Democrat MSP last time and has been deputy minister for parliament. The ban on hunting with dogs did not play well in such a rural constituency, but the big issue here has been the controversy over Borders Council's apparent mismanagement of its education budget, a crisis which brought down the independent administration. It was replaced by a Lib Dem/SNP coalition.
