DESCRIPTION: Ross, Skye & Inverness West
This is the UK's largest constituency, covering two million acres over the sparsely populated Highlands and Islands. Farming, fishing and oil play an important part in the local economy, as does whisky distilling and bottling. The farms, especially in the Black Isle area, are generally very prosperous and many of the seat's inhabitants are comfortably off. There are a substantial number of Gaelic speakers. The current MP here is Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy since August 1999. Highland Councillor John Munro won the Holyrood seat for the Lib Dems in 1999 with a narrow majority of 4.3% (1,539 votes), amid close challenges from Labour and the SNP.

The executive's new land reform legislation will potentially have a huge impact here. Other issues include the ongoing controversy over tolls on the Skye bridge and, in the east of the constituency, protests over genetically-modified crop trials on the Black Isle.
