DESCRIPTION: Paisley North
Paisley North is an industrial seat; it also includes the towns of Renfrew and Linwood, as well as Glasgow Airport. It is bordered to the north east by the River Clyde. There is a high proportion of council housing, with unemployment being as much of a problem here as it is in any other depressed Clydeside constituency. The Hillington industrial estate takes up a large area in the west of the seat, and provides many inhabitants with places of work, but non-manual, white-collar, jobs are thin on the ground.

The constituency has been Labour territory. Donald Dewar's former special adviser Wendy Alexander won the Holyrood seat in 1999. She is the sister of the MP for neighbouring Paisley South, Douglas Alexander. Ms Alexander was a close confidante of Mr Dewar's, but clashed with his successor Henry McLeish. Although she was spared in Jack McConnell's cabinet purge when he took office, she walked out on his administration months later for personal reasons”.
