DESCRIPTION: Inverness East Nairn & Lochaber
Geographically, this is the second-largest constituency in the country, stretching from Mallaig on the west coast to Inverness on the east. It takes in Fort William, Loch Ness, Ben Nevis, the Cairngorms and the Aviemore ski resort, making it a prime region for tourists. Off-shore oil industries are common near Inverness, and although demand for off-shore services is now declining, new light industries are emerging. This seat and the neighbouring constituency Moray have suffered from the downturn in the oil industry.

It is now one of only five seats where different parties hold the Westminster and Holyrood seats. The SNP’s Fergus Ewing won the seat with a slim majority of 1.1% over the Labour candidate in 1999. At the 2001 election Labour doubled its majority, with the Lib Dem vote also rising. With the parties this close, it is likely to be one of the most-keenly fought contests in the country this time.
