Scottish Parliament election
constituency
DESCRIPTION: Glasgow Springburn
The suburb of Springburn was once an independent burgh and held the largest railway engineering yard in Europe. The constituency is home to the Sighthill estate, now temporary home to many asylum-seekers – sparking a degree of tension with local residents, although recent efforts to integrate the two communities have met with some success. Stobhill Hospital has been the focus of controversy over plans to downgrade general facilities, and to house a secure unit for mentally ill criminals within the grounds.
The seat has had a father and son team of Holyrood representatives 1999. The MSP is Paul Martin, son Michael Martin, the sitting Westminster MP and Commons speaker Michael Martin. Like his father, Paul Martin started his political career as a Glasgow councillor. PREVIOUS RESULTS
