DESCRIPTION: Galloway & Upper Nithsdale
This seat is blessed with a diverse landscape encompassing hills, valleys and the Solway coast. Agriculture, forestry and limited tourism are the mainstays of the local economy, although the ex-mining towns of Kirkconnel and Sanquhar in the north are home to some diverse light industries. Galloway suffered profoundly during the foot-and-mouth outbreak of 2001.

The SNP's Alasdair Morgan won Galloway & Upper Nithsdale from the Conservative Ian Lang in 1997. The SNP represented this seat between October 1974 and 1979, and had expected to retake it in 1992, but Mr Lang defied expectations and increased his majority. Mr Morgan won the Holyrood seat in 1999 with a 3,201 majority. However, in 2001 Galloway and Upper Nithsdale was the scene of the Tory revival in Scotland. Peter Duncan was elected as the Conservativesí first (and only) Scottish MP since the 1997 wipeout. The Tories hope to repeat that performance.
