The electoral picture in the Central Scotland region appears to be one of almost unrelieved uniformity. Labour won every seat at both the 1992 and 1997 general elections, but the region was also the scene of the party's biggest humiliation in 1999, when Dennis Canavan took the Falkirk West constituency. Had he been relying on the regional vote, he would have won there and, if he fails to hold onto the constituency, he may still return as a list MSP. The Labour strength at constituency level was reflected by a Scottish National Party domination of the list, with five members returned.
