Ice rink 2.5m upgrade approved

19 August 09 09:38 GMT

A £2.5m overhaul of an ice rink site in southern Scotland has been approved.

The project, at the Ice Bowl in Dumfries, will see the refrigeration unit upgraded and other major improvement works carried out.

An indoor bowling area in the building will also be replaced with a dedicated curling rink.

Talks are now set to take place with the Nithsdale Indoor Bowling Club to try to find a new location for their organisation to be based.

The council was considering redeveloping a unit it owns on the Irongray industrial estate for use by the bowling club, but was ruled out on cost grounds.

The future of the bowling club, which has seen membership fall from 1,200 to 150, has been in the spotlight for some.

Dumfries and Galloway Council's leisure and sport department has pledged to work with the group to find an alternative building and identify potential funding.
